Checking your web-based email is great. You can access mails from any computer. But you can only access your mail if the computer is connected to Internet. Now a days you can get Internet Connection easily. But still some time you can not access your web mail because of unreliable or unavailable connection.

Even if you are offline, you can open your web browser, go to gmail.com, and get to your mail just like you’re used to.

Google introduced offline Gmail to fill these gaps. You can enable this feature on your Gmail settings. Go to your Gmail settings and enable offline Gmail. Then Gmail uses Gears to download local cache of your mail. This local cache is synchronized with Gmail servers as long as you are connected to the Internet. Gmail switched to offline mode when you lost the Internet connection and use local copy of your mail stored on your hard drive. You can do all things on offline mode as you do on Gmail when you are online. You can read mails, star, label, delete them and even you can send mails while you are offline. The messages you send while offline will be stored in outbox of your local cache and automatically sent when Gmail detects connection. During offline you feel same browser based Gmail.

You should install Google Gears to work offline Gmail as it uses Gears to download local cache.
